Massage Therapist Steven Cockburn's Journey to becoming Chartered Physiotherapist

My journey to becoming a Chartered Physiotherapist - getting to know Steven Cockburn

After 10 years as a Personal Trainer and Massage Therapist, I felt like I was coming to a crossroads in my career. Many of my clients were getting stronger and fitter, but every now and then an injury would creep in or a setback in their training that would require the input of a Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist.

After having worked closely with a team of Physiotherapists in my last few years in London, I witnessed first hand their ability to diagnose and treat all types of musculoskeletal conditions and how rehabilitation helps recovery from musculoskeletal conditions. Physiotherapy is based in science and research and offered an evidence based way of treating clients to help recover from injury and illness.

It was then I realised I had been searching for a Physiotherapy career path all along and that this was going to be the next step in my career journey.

Physiotherapy is a very competitive environment despite there being a shortage of qualified practitioners. I believed the skills and experience I gained over the years stood me apart from others with my experience as a Personal Trainer a Massage Therapist. My journey to becoming a qualified and Chartered Physiotherapist has given me a wide range of skills and experiences that I carry forward into private practice and in the NHS working closely with patients to return them to optimal health and fitness levels.

During my studies, I experienced a wide range of NHS clinical placement settings from being on hospital wards in major trauma, orthopaedics, rehabilitation, community paediatrics to MSK outpatients. My Masters degree also led me to conduct research into the potential benefits of prehabilitation in those undergoing prostate cancer treatment.

After having successfully secured a full time NHS role before graduating I continue to improve my skills and experience with further MSK educational courses as well as training with Jill & her team. I am very excited to be part of the Physiotherapy team at Jill Kerr Physiotherapy at Therap-Ease offering Massage and Physiotherapy services to the Edinburgh community. I have a calm and friendly manner and believe I am a great addition to the Massage and Physio team.
