What is Women's Health?
Women’s Health is a Specialist Physiotherapy Service that assesses the extent and potential factors of your problem and offers solutions that should help to improve your bladder control. There are different types of bladder problems affecting the female population. The chances of one of your friends or family being affected is 1 in 3. Unfortunately the stigma surrounding the embarrassment of these problems prevents Women seeking help. And there is help available!
Explanation of common bladder problems
Urge incontinence when you have a strong and sudden need to pass urine but cannot reach the toilet in time. Stress incontinence when you experience bladder leaks when doing everyday functions such as coughing, sneezing, exercising or laughing Mixed incontinence is the combination of stress and urge incontinence symptoms. Frequency is where you run to the loo at increasing frequent intervals and plan your day around when your next toilet visit will be.
What are the causes?
Pregnancy and childbirth puts strain on your pelvic floor. Re-activating control of this post pregnancy can be difficult for a lot of women. There are many options of how this can be improved. Menopause related sensitive bladder is due to a significant drop in oestrogen levels. Increased frequency and sudden urges are the most common symptoms. Discussions with your GP can help with this. Being overweight puts pressure on the bladder, urethra, and pelvic floor muscles. Losing weight can help but retraining of muscles may be required. The Health Service and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy are keen for this problem to be tackled and it is time that Women looked out for each other and tackled this problem to improve their quality of life!
